Mardi Gras at Tyrrell

Students in all French classes had fun celebrating Mardi Gras at the end of February. They learned about the history and traditions of this holiday, as well as the various ways it is celebrated in different areas of the French-speaking world. Students cooked and sampled food associated with the holiday and created their own masks and jesters. Each class then voted for the most beautiful, most original, and best Mardi Gras themed masks, as well as for the best jester.

UNICEF World Education Games

Tyrrell’s Project Explore students recently competed in the UNICEF World Education Games involving 5.5 million students from 200 countries and territories around the world. The students did a great job answering questions in all three contests – Spelling, Math, and Science.
On Friday, we learned that one of our 8th graders, Matthew Stojanov placed in the top 100 in the science competition. Matthew finished in 33rd place out of 1.57 million students participating in the science competition. He will receive the Ruby Award from the United Nations.
We also learned that one of our Project Explore 8th grade teams came in 12th overall in the World Science Day competition! They will receive the Gold Award from the United Nations.
Participating students will also be donating $236 to UNICEF to purchase one School-In-A-Box, enough supplies to educate 80 children in remote areas of the globe for an entire year.

Students Rally for CMT

Tyrrell held a CMT rally on March 5th as a kickoff for the Connecticut Mastery Test, which began the next day. Awards were given to students who either scored all 5’s (advanced level) or who scored two levels higher than on last year’s CMT test.
Students were entertained by teachers Mr. Goldstone, Mr. Terry, and Mr. Toller, who sang and played a CMT rap, along with the juggling skills of Mr. Kelsey, and a group of 6th graders who sang a figurative language rap.
At the end, Tyrrell t-shirts were thrown out to the student audience to catch if they could!

Board of Education Appreciation Month

Each year in March we take time to show thanks for all of the time and talent our Wolcott BOE members spend on making our schools' great. We are very lucky to have a group of such caring community members lead our school district. Thank you: Mr. Macary, Dr. Eberle, Mrs. Najarian, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Gubitosi, Mr. Casagrande, Mrs. Cordone, Mrs. DelBuono, Ms. Leonard, Mrs. Lumia and Mrs. Mancini.

Sixth Grade Family Math and Science Night

On Wednesday, February 8, 2012, the fifth annual Sixth Grade Family Math and Science Night took place in the Tyrrell gymnasium. Approximately 70 students and nearly 100 family members engaged in many activities to enhance the math and science curriculums. The sixth grade math, science, and special education teachers received a grant from the Wolcott Education Foundation to purchase consumable materials and provide each student with an activity packet to continue the learning at home. The students practiced estimation, measurement, communication, and problem solving, to increase their logical thinking. Some of the many stations that captured the interests of the participants included: Fraction Bowling, Exploring with Microscopes, Construction by Instruction, Balloon Jet Races, Toothpick Puzzles, the game of SET, and Drops on a Penny. A computer gaming area that provided a variety of websites to boost student achievement was also quite popular. Eighteen National Junior Honor Society members provided assistance to families at many of the stations. The excitement concluded with presenting prizes to the students that most accurately estimated the number of items in a variety of jars.
The teachers involved in hosting the Family Math and Science Night appreciate the dedication of Wolcott families in making the education of their children a top priority. Mrs. Bove-Virr, Mrs. Cox, Mr. Goldstone, Mrs. Jasulavic, Mr. Jones, and Ms. Regan would like to thank the following people for their assistance at this exciting learning event: Mrs. Tansley, Mr. Simpson, Mr. Sette, Ms. McGuffie, the entire custodial staff, and the National Junior Honor Society members who showed up to help supervise stations.
