A "Captivating" Weekend...
On Saturday, April 27th students from the CAPTivating Kids program traveled to the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden to build and race elastic band cars!
Comedy or Tragedy? That is the Question...
After spending a few weeks in reading class discussing how the theater evolved through centuries, students created theatrical Greek masks as part of the drama unit. Students had to decide if the mask would be part of a comedy or tragedy.
8th Grade Reader's Theater
Preparing to read The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, students were broken up into groups and assigned a script to perform in front of their class. This Readers Theater assignment offered students a fun, interactive way to build fluency and motivated the students to experiment with language, work with expression, pacing, tone, inflection, meaning, and interpretation. They had a great time acting out all of their scenes in front of the class!

Story Extension in 6th Grade
Mrs. Uccello and Mrs. Rosa’s 6th grade Reading classes visited Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Stec’s Kindergarten classes at Wakelee School on April 24. The 6th graders read the sequels they wrote to the book, Strega Nona by Tomie de Paola and designed lesson plans around their stories for the Kindergarteners to complete. The lessons focused mainly on the retelling of a story in proper sequence and understanding the story’s theme. The 6th graders showed great teaching skills in preparing age appropriate lessons, and making the lessons engaging, and fun. The kindergarteners enjoyed hearing the stories and were engrossed in the lessons, showing all they learned by completing both hands on and written activities! It was a great learning experience for all!
